“A marathon that pays off in the long run”
ESG, CSRD, Green Deal – short words with a big impact. Regulatory requirements and reporting in the area of sustainability are increasingly on the minds of companies. The days when this was a “nice-to-have” topic are certainly over. The new requirements mean that substance counts more than ever when presenting corporate sustainability performance. A bothersome obligation or a huge opportunity? Peter Poppe has a clear opinion on this matter and explains it in an interview with Tonno Digitale, a blog for B2B PR and digital corporate communications.

A unique opportunity to optimise the business model
Even an unpopular framework environment can have positive effects – and these should be used to your advantage. HGB Managing Director Peter Poppe advocates for this approach in the Tonno Digitale interview. He says a good example is the obligation to conduct a materiality analysis: when done thoroughly, it not only provides data for reporting, but can also prove to be a unique opportunity to holistically optimise the business model.
The HGB Managing Director argues that corporate transformation is the key to long-term competitiveness and thus future viability. This is why the entire range of sustainability topics should be permanently integrated into every area of the company. “This isn’t a short-distance race but a marathon that requires considerable stamina,” says Poppe.
To make sure this marathon pays off in the end, companies preparing a sustainability report for the first time should take a planned approach. Peter Poppe gives tips on what they should pay attention to internally and when selecting the right service providers and explains why it is worth investing in quality. Poppe concludes the interview by taking a look at the future and the upcoming developments in sustainability communications and transparency obligations.
